Dear Putnam County Business Community,
When asked on the last day of the meeting of the Constitutional Congress in 1787 if the form of government that the Founding Fathers had just created was a monarchy or a republic, Doctor Benjamin Franklin allegedly replied “a republic, if you can keep it”. As we all have been taught, in a republic, the people hold the power and elect representatives to exercise that power. Fortunately, the people of the United States have kept the republic intact for over 200 years.
With the continued preservation of the republic in mind, I recently attended the ceremonial swearing in of newly installed New York State Assemblywoman for the 95th Assembly District Dana Levenberg (which includes Philipstown in Putnam County), which was enthusiastically performed by the U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Senator Schumer’s presence was welcomed by a large crowd, which included 40 elected officials from nearby municipalities, including Matt Slater, newly installed State Assemblyman for the 94th Assembly District (which includes the rest of Putnam County). Senator Schumer reminded the audience that before serving in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate he had served in the State Assembly for 5 years..
The senior Senator from New York referred to Doctor Franklin’s challenge about keeping the republic as he described the fragility of democracy in America today. He pointed out that our republic is distinguished from others in the world by our high level of participation in the democratic process and urged those in attendance to take time out of their busy lives to continue to do so.
The Putnam County Business Council (PCBC) has reaffirmed its mission of advocacy on behalf of the Chambers of Commerce in the County and its pursuit of what is in the best interest of all the businesses located here. Representatives of the PCBC will continue to participate in all levels of the democratic process, be particularly active in the activities of State and County government and keep the business community up to date on what is relevant to their interests.
We recently published a list of elected officials in Putnam County at the federal, state and county levels to help business people contact their government representatives. Because the list is long and can be confusing to individuals unfamiliar with the various levels of government, we would be delighted to help you determine which official at what level of government is the appropriate one to contact about a particular issue. As the voice for Putnam County’s business community, we are contacting the New York State Independent Redistricting Commission to encourage you to preserve continuity of representation and the core of the existing district for New York’s 94th Assembly District.
For two decades, eastern Putnam County, including the Town of Carmel and the hamlet of Mahopac, has been connected to the northern Westchester towns Somers and Yorktown in a combined State Assembly district. This is significant because Yorktown, Somers, Carmel and eastern Putnam County are a single, cohesive community of interest connected by the Route 6 and Route 202 corridors, with interconnected economies and community concerns.
Despite its relatively modest size, Putnam County is extremely diverse. The Route 202 and Route 6 corridors, along with the Route 22 corridor in the Town of Southeast, Putnam County, are fundamentally different than the Route 9 corridor in Phillipstown and Cold Spring. The county’s economy is clearly bifurcated between the east and the west, with the eastern portion of the county historically integrated with Yorktown and Somers. We strongly believe the existing configuration of the 94th Assembly District provides the best representation for our county and our region and we encourage you to preserve it.
We would also like to specifically comment on the Commission’s proposal to split the Town of Carmel, which includes the hamlet of Mahopac. The Town of Carmel, including the community of Mahopac, acts as the linchpin for Putnam County on a variety levels which is why we strongly encourage the Commission to reconsider this proposal. Similarly, we strongly disagree with the proposal of separating Mahopac from the eastern portion of the county with which it has traditionally and appropriately shared representation in the State Assembly.
The Putnam County Business Council appreciates your attention to this matter and hopes that you restore and respect the longstanding communities of interest, continuity of representation and core of the existing 94th State Assembly District.

Secondaries Boutique will have a formal and prom wear event from 6-8pm. Prom Dresses modeled and available for purchase, 20% of non-consignment item sales proceeds and 5% of consignment item sales proceeds go to Carmel HS.
Come down, hang out, and sip coffee or enjoy some waffles while shopping for a good cause. Support the local community and find something great at the same time!

Our partners at the Business council of New York are pleased to announce the 2023 New York State Workforce Innovation Awards application process is officially open!
The four award categories are as follows:
- P-12 Workforce Innovation Award
- Higher Education Workforce Innovation Award
- Non-Profit Workforce Innovation Award
- Business Workforce Leadership Award
**Applicants for the Business Workforce Leadership Award will not require a video.
The application deadline is Sunday, March 12, at 11:59 PM. All training and education finalists will be announced in early April. The 2023 awards luncheon will be held on Friday, May 19, in Albany.
