Political Intolerance: The Muck Of Our Own Making

Why can’t we all get along? A trite question, but with nearly 3 billion Google results, it would appear that the population is still searching for an answer. Observing the utter lack of respect for one another and elected officials is disconcerting.  But the divisiveness that is cracking our humanity acror ss county, state, and nation is frightening. It seems that many Americans believe that  beating the red out of blue and blue out of red is the only answer. And so we continue to devolve.

I strive to remain bi-partisan in my role as PCBC chairwoman, but for the purpose of illustrating a point, I will admit that I am not a Trump fan. However, I am capable of recognizing work that he and his administration have accomplished and that we have all benefited from. I do not believe that constant criticism and bashing is effective and only works against us as a country. Here’s a thought, what if we took a different tack to get the best out of our government representatives? Remember, what you focus on expands. So, I’m going to practice what I preach and highlight some of President Trump’s achievements that have stimulated our economy:

  • More oil and gas production in the USA
  • Increased military spending
  • Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act provided $2 trillion to aid those affected by COVID and stimulate the economy.

The vitriol doesn’t stop at the President. On a local level, our elected officials are regularly berated by opposing parties. It would be more effective if those groups presented viable candidates to run as representatives of their party.

In theory, most agree that we should work together for the common good, but we’ve had this conversation repeatedly over the years. Unfortunately, I’m starting to believe that the primary hindrance to our progress and growth stems from a prioritization of politics over the preservation of our population and country.

How can we expect progress, economic development and smart growth when we cannot even get along with each other. If for every project or proposal we have to get through discord and in-fighting, the muck of our own making will continue to impede our progress.

It’s time to stop playing for the uniform and start building a real team. Let’s put a stop to the division and get some real work done. We need progressive action to bring infrastructure, support economic development, improve transportation and affordable housing to attract young people, industry and growth. We can’t do that while fighting amongst ourselves. It’s fine to support your candidate during election time, but if they lose, the elected party is entitled to your  support and respect to affect the greater good. As a whole, we are stronger, smarter and united under a common purpose greater than ourselves..
